Bachontoi the Omniscient
Bachontoi the Omniscient is the God of Sages. He is depicted as a very old man with a long gray beard, garbed in a white rope. It is said he possesses the Book of All Knowledge and, therefore, knows the answers to all problems and questions. His domains are Good, Knowledge, Magic, Trickery, Rune, and Spell.
Although a good-aligned deity, Bachontoi offers his assistance only to those deemed worthy. Worthiness, according to priests of Bachontoi, is demonstrated not only by years of study, but also by the ability to think logically under pressure and apply one’s knowledge wisely, in a manner that does not cause unnecessary harm to others. This latter doctrine differentiates Bachontoi from his major competitor among the scholarly community, Thoth, whose followers preach the acquisition and use of knowledge for knowledge’s sake, with little regard to consequences. Both churches guard their stores of knowledge jealously. Bachontoi’s followers insist their protectiveness is necessary only because certain types of knowledge are dangerous. They criticize the Church of Thoth’s nearly identical behavior as motivated only by a desire to maintain that Church’s importance and position.
Bachontoi’s followers are known for devoting themselves ferociously to study when a particularly interesting or important problem presents itself. They can often be seen wandering their libraries in something of a stupor, having forgone sleep in favor of a few extra hours of study. From their bloodshot eyes, Bachontoi earns his more commonly known title as the “God of Red Wisdom.” Bachontoi’s followers also are terribly fond of riddles. Their prayers, and the passwords to their well-protected libraries, nearly always take riddle form. It is said that Bachontoi himself will reward those who perform acts of great kindness with access to the Book of All Knowledge, if they can also answer a riddle first. Our Hero, Anmor Gorkbeard, worships Bachontoi.
